This Hempalicous Smoothie was created for my daughter and myself. It has a nice mild hemp flavour paired with some maca and a little bit of cacao but also has the extra calories and nutrients that I want in my diet.
You are probably wondering why I would want to add more calories to my diet? It’s not that I want to bulk up or anything like that but I do want to continue to maintain a certain weight. Many people who go on a raw food diet tend to lose weight (myself included) and this is usually an awesome thing. However If you have been on a raw food diet for a while or you have a slender build to begin with you might actually be in the group of people who want to increase your weight and that is where nutrient dense foods like hemp seeds are amazing for you.
Hemp is a great addition to your raw food diet if you need to gain more protein and calories. Hemp is literally a PLANT BASED POWERHOUSE OF NUTRIENTS! I kid you not. Hemp seed is a complete protein and a great source of EFA’s and therefore it is a key ingredient that raw foodies and vegans can incorporate into their diet.
One of the other things that I love about hemp is the calories! For around 3TBS you can add an extra 170 calories to your smoothie with a whopping 10 grams of digestible protein. Not only do you get a great source of plant based digestible protein, calories and EFA’s, you also get all of those lovely minerals such as manganese, zinc, iron, magnesium, folate, thiamine. Yes and we can’t forget that it is also used to make clothes, bath products, paper and much more.
2 Cups of Water
4-6 TBS of Hemp Seeds Or Hearts
1/4 tsp of high quality powdered vanilla
1 TBS of Maca
1-2 TBS of Raw Cacao Nibs
1-2 TBS Raw Cacao Powder
1-2 Frozen Bananas (alternatively you could use dates but the frozen banana makes it super creamy)
Put all of the ingredients into your high speed blender and blend until everything until smooth and creamy. Make sure to taste the smoothie and adjust accordingly. For those new to hemp seeds you may choose to use only 3-4 TBS of hemp seeds. However you can go up to 1/2 cup-1 cup or more. The maca is optional but I love to add it in for extra nutritional support. Store extra smoothie in a glass mason jar in fridge.
Here are some more fun and simple ways to use hemp seeds everyday:
- Sprinkle on top of your salads
- Add to your raw desserts.
- If your family is eating cooked food you can add it to their meals of rice, oatmeal and desserts
- Make hemp milk and use for morning breakfast
- Hemp crackers, raw desserts
- Raw Trail Mix (one of my favourite ways to use hemp seeds).
TIP: If you find the taste of raw hemp milk to strong start slowly and use more water to create a milder taste. This works well for the children in your home who may not want a full on strong hemp milk until they have acquired a taste for it.
I would love to hear from you. Leave me a comment on how you use hemp seeds in your diet and if you like this recipe…
